I always seem to take a perverse pleasure in making things difficult for myself.  Not content with creating a collection of 26 original illustrations representing a particular letter of the alphabet, I decided each illustration needed an accompanying capital.  Although inspired by the myriad of typefaces that have been created over the centuries, they are as unique and eclectic as the main illustrations themselves.    The title, A is for Alien and its accompanying illustration are not so much to be taken literally, but hopefully encourage the reader to see common objects and concepts from another point of view.  After all, everything is alien when we see it for the first time.  This book is not meant to be carried with the reader, but left on a table waiting for someone to come along and open its cover to see what is inside.

      The more than 52 illustrations for this book were created using a dip pen and India ink, graphite, or conte crayon, then scanned and laid out on my computer.  The pages, printed on Canson Classic Cream artist paper ® are deckled and hand sewn to create the book block, then mounted into the cover created from a variety of handmade papers and book cloth.  The book pictured above was created using Egyptian papyrus and green book cloth.  Each book takes approximately one day to make.
