The 2013Tacoma Studio Tours
November 2-3
Be sure to visit my studio for the Twelfth annual Tacoma Studio Tours,
11am - 5pm, Saturday & Sunday, November 12-13. This year, I added
another dimension to my artwork when I began wrapping up (literally and
figuratively) my recent project, Extraordinary Popular Delusions & The
Madness of Crows for which I received a Tacoma Artist Initiative Project
grant in 2011. Please join me as I demonstrate how I create the
leather binding for the finished book. As if learning to work in
leather wasn't enough, you will also get to see the finished handmade
wooden boxes I have made for each Extraordinary Delusions book.
Just as no two leather bound books are alike, so are no two wooden
boxes. Distressed wood, rusty hinges and fasteners, old
leather, sisal rope, and even found pieces of driftwood or stone are
used to make these unique creations.

participating as well as the studio locations, go to the

3rd Annual Member
Exhibition
This exhibition at
the Collins Memorial Library on the
University of Puget Sound campus located in
Tacoma, Washington marks the third annual
membership show of the Puget Sound Book
Artists (PSBA). It features a wide variety
of handmade books by thirty different
artists from the Puget Sound area and
beyond. The exhibit has grown in popularity
over the last three years, and this year new
members from Oregon, New Mexico and Indiana
are featured. These talented artists
interpret the book in exciting and original
ways that push the boundaries of tradition. |

2013 is
looking to be as busy and as enjoyable as 2012. In January,
after being a member of the organization since 2011, I was notified
by the Board of the Puget Sound Book Artists that I had been elected
to serve on the board of directors. I look forward to the new challenge
as well as meeting and working with all of the members of the PSBA.

2012 was a busy year. Scroll down to visit some of the more
memorable moments of 2012.
In conjunction with the 2012 Tacoma Studio
Tours, myself and two other artists were invited to participate in
an interesting group discussion about the studio tours, our work,
and our studios on the October 23rd episode of Cityline on the City
of Tacoma cable network. Our discussion is preserved in their
archives at
www.cityoftacoma.org/page.aspx?hid=10248.
Click on the 2012
Archive, and then the October 23 episode. Our discussion
begins approximately at the 32 minute mark. |
The Tacoma Studio Tours
November 3-4, 2012
11am-5pm
This year, in addition to setting up a canopy with the usual artwork
on display for viewing and purchase, I will also be demonstrating
the techniques and materials I use to create my personal sketchbooks
as well as my finished art books such as A is for Alien which
will be available for purchase along with my other books. I
will also have on display the portfolios of the finished images from
my exhibition, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of
Crows, hosted by Collins Memorial Library at the University of
Puget Sound and funded partially with a TAIP grant from the Tacoma
Arts Commission earlier this year. This is an ongoing project
for which I am currently working on the side panels which accompany
each piece. I hope to see you on the Tour!

A is for Alien
On July 21st 2012, the original A is
for Alien created with wood, jute, papyrus and other materials
became a part of the collection of Collins Memorial Library at the
University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. The
original illustrations can still be viewed in a smaller, hand bound
version using handmade papers for the cover and created in the
artists studio. These smaller versions are now available for
sale. For inquiries,
contact me at mark@markhoppmannart.com or call, 253 495 1830. For more information on the
illustrations and the book making process click on the image above. |

Extraordinary Personal
Delusions
And The
Madness of Crows
February 1-29, 2012
The
exhibition may be over, but the memories remain. A
heartfelt Thank You to everyone who attended the
exhibition, my reception, the presentation and especially
for the comments of support. Also a warm Thank You
to those at the Tacoma Arts Commission and Collins
Library who made this project possible.
This project has
not yet been completed. While more than 60 images were
completed for the exhibition, many more illustrations will
be created before I feel my work regarding this project is
done. I hope everyone stays with me for the journey.
In the meantime click above on
News and Events to get a sneak
peek of my current project, which unlike Extraordinary
Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crows is much more
finite. Enjoy, and again, Thank You. |
Extraordinary
Personal Delusions and the Madness of Crows
is
made possible in part
by a generous grant
through the
Tacoma Artists
Initiative Program
from the Tacoma Arts Commission
|
Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds was
written by Charles MacKay, and first published in 1842. Like
that first work, "The Madness of Crows", is also based on delusions
(mine), centered around my favorite artistic subject (crows).
What began as small sketches a few years ago has evolved into a
series of more than 60 illustrations, which have become more and
more intricate as new ideas evolve from the old. Inspired,
(albeit) loosely by the borders and motifs found in The
Book of Kells, "The Madness of Crows" also uses elaborate border
motifs, interspersed with random bits of randomness throughout, in
addition to the main illustrations. Those random "bits" and
illustrations, explore pop culture, literature, world civilization.
and a great deal of material in between, with a generous use of word
play and visual double entendre. Below are three
selected images from the exhibition. |

Thirteen Ways of
Looking at a Blackbird
In
April, 2010, I collaborated with
www.simplemeasures.org
who performed thirteen arrangements created by
composer, Thomas Albers based on the poems of Wallace Stevens,
Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. The
illustrations I created for the four concerts, were then reproduced
in a limited edition handmade book which I created in my studio.
There are still a limited # of hand signed books from the original
limited edition still for sale for those who still have not reserved
one for their collection. Click
here for more
information about the book. Contact
mark@markhoppmannart.com
for price and availability.

The Studio Project
It's amazing what new shingle siding, new gutters and downspouts,
caulking, and a
new
coat of
paint
can do for the studio and, yes, even the soul.
Only a two week do it yourself project, and completed during our
warm spell in March, 2010, it will be good to get back to my art.
Call (253) 495-1830 for an appointment.

Twelve Days
Almost two years ago, the seed for a series of illustrations for The
Twelve Days of Christmas began germinating in my mind. After
all, if I could illustrate Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird
by Wallace Stevens, this would be a cinch. As it turned out,
Twelve Days underwent many transformations until it finally evolved
into anything but the poem your grandmother read and unlike anything
you learned in school.
